Hello from Mungus

Hi everyone. Just an introduction.

Thanks for having me, I was really pleased to see this website existed, as I'm a beginner and most of the stuff I've seen was for the USA / Europe etc. Got the astronomy bug from my Dad in the 1970's using his 1960's refractor (sadly lost many years ago).

So I have just got my first decent telescope; An 8" / 200 mm Saxon Newtonian on an HEQ5 GOTO mount. Its got SkyScan which is a brand new concept to me, so many hours of confusion to come!

I've already had one shock, when setting up my finder scope in the front yard I realised something obvious - everythings upside down! Guess I need an erector eyepiece of some sort. I know it makes little difference looking upwards - but to me its just plain weird! (My Dad's old refractor was "right way up").

Thanks for the welcome. Have got the new set up ready to go, if only the weather would co-operate. The rain was needed though!

i have a similar setup to you, cept my 8" is f6 (i am assuming your is f4 or 5)

Hi Mungus,

welcome aboard. I wouldn't bother with the erecting eyepiece. As you've pointed out, it doesn't make much difference when looking up at the sky, and people just plain old get used to the weirdness of moving the scope in all the wrong directions to follow something.

Welcome to IIS, I hope your enjoy your stay. Congrats on the new
purchase it should give you many years of enjoyment. Personally
I wouldn't bother with an erector eyepiece or lens. It is something
you'll most probably get used to fairly quickly, besides the less glass
between you and the object your observing the better and when
your observing it really dont matter what way the object is orientated.
The only other thing I guess is planets, but they come out right way
up as we're looking at them upside down if you call north top lol. But
then again if you feel comfortable with that, then who am I to say.
