What you have got is slop in the primary mirror caused partially by an uneven distribution of grease on the tube that the mirror rides up and down on. I had a similar amount of slop on one scope, until I wound the mirror forward and back through its full range about 20 times. This redistributes the grease and can make a huge difference when focusing.

Thanks Eric, that makes sense and come to think of it when I turned the focus knob for the first time, it felt tight & stiff during one half of its revolution then free on the other half so I did go all the way in & out and then it did feel more even..... but I did have a sore wrist after doing it once!
