12P/Pons-Brooks from Melbourne

managed a first glimpse of Pons-Brooks from Melbourne last night.

Unfortunately, from my vantage point, its locations seems to coincide with just about every flight into and out of Melb airportso it was a little challenging to process (had to remove half of my subs)!

This is 170 x 10 second subs on the RASA 8 with ASI 183MC, processed in APP. I have not tried to remove star trails at this stage.

As I had to idea what to expect, and very little time to prepare, I have chopped off part of the ion tail (sigh) and rather over-exposed the core. The good new though is that it appears to be quite slow moving and so no guiding was required, just mount tracking.

Hopefully there will be a nice window in coming weeks when it is high enough in the sky but still bright enough for imaging..

cheers, Jon

A few nights ago I stood in a park across the road from my house, didn’t see a thing! Not of the comet anyway, watched ISS traverse the sky, watched a bunch of satellites in the binoculars but no comet to be seen. Damn that pesky light pollution!
