What Camera to buy
Hi Guys
I have been given the ok to buy myself a camera
Which one to buy is driving me crazy, I am looking for some advice or recommendations please.
The scopes I have are, Orion 120 ED, Orion 80 ED, Celestron C8,
I would say I will be using the two ED's more than the C8,
The cameras which are in my price range are ZWO ASI 294MC Pro, 533MC Pro
and the 183MC Pro.
I mainly want to do Deep sky, and general telephotography.
Any advice will be Very welcome,
Cheers Peter

Peter, for the longer focal lengths, I'd suggest the larger pixel models, either the 294 or the 533. Your 80mm might get a little resolution anxiety, but it'd be decent enough.
From a practical point of view, the 533 looks pretty good in that it doesn't suffer from amp glow or any ugliness that might hamper calibration for long exposure deep sky imaging.
The 183 is popular and has well known horrific looking amp glow, but it tends to calibrate out pretty well.
The 294 had a bit of a bumpy start with some colour cast issues reported elsewhere, but it's a popular choice and it'd be worth getting some feedback before choosing this one.

Thx for your reply,
The 294, has been out for a couple years now, I think, So I am assuming the problems where in the beginning, I am kinda hoping they have improved over this time, going purely by the fact of how popular they are, But as no supplier has any in stock, And that goes for all 3 of them, I will have to wait and see.
cheers

The 183 is very sensitive and has small pixels so it suits shorter focal lengths like you have. I just sold mine, a reluctant sale. Amp glow is not a problem and it calibrates out easily and fully.
The 533 is the smallest sensor and its square shaped. But it has no amp glow and is like a mini ASI2600/6200 in that it appears to be the same pixel structure. Sounds good but small sensor. But with your relatively short focal length scopes that probably isn't a problem.
The 294C is a micro 4/3rds size sensor so its decent size. I have read about odd calibration issues like odd looking flats but from what I have read calibration still works.
You should also consider the 1600MC as its probably come down in price in the 2nd hand market.

Thx for your reply Greg,
BTW, many years ago you had an ED80 which you sold, I was the lucky buyer,
That scope is still with me, and still works perfectly, I love it
Cheers

That's great. Thanks for letting me know. It is a good scope. Nice and light too.

Given my experience, outline on this forum, do not buy a camera which may have to be returned to the UK for service.

There is a mono ASI2600 coming out I believe in January. That is an APSc sized sensor. It will cost more but its eagerly awaited by quite a few.
3.76 micron pixels, 90% QE, APS sized. But it will cost approx. US$2000.

I use a Skywatcher ED80 with a 294MC. I can say that Amp glow is not a problem with my example of the camera; dark frames always remove the glow. Flats fix the other stuff for me.
Another point to consider is the FOV. With a 0.8x reducer, the FOV on my ED80 is a good size for most of the DSO targets I image.
Lastly, Imaging sampling scale is fine for the ED80 as well.

This or the equivalent QHY one I'm waiting for as well. I was thinking of going full frame with something like the 6200, but the all the extra costs make it just too prohibitive right now. With the 2600, it should be ok to use 36mm filters, so I'll have no extra costs than the camera (hopefully).

Last rumour I saw was talking about a mono 2600 in Jan next year.
Also you may want to look over Cloudy Nights threads as 31mm filters may work on a greater than F6 scope but a faster scope may need wider filters like the 36. But confirm for yourself. There are threads that talk about this there in the experienced deep sky imaging forum.
A lot of people are hanging out for this model so I would suggest if you see someone offering it or preorder it may be smart to lock it in early as it likely to backordered for some time. Cloud Break Optics was taking preorders at one time and also offer a notification service for when it is available. Best to get on that list.
The 2600MC camera is very popular also has a lot of happy campers.
Greg.

I've got 36mm already so it's no change over costs. And with a reducer I can get below F6. I also have been following the threads on Cloudy Nights.
I can (probably) hang out until they are available, because realistically I'm not going to get much imaging done here in Qld until the end of summer (if any).

Its a hard camera to beat for many imagers setups.
It should be worth the wait.
