How dark is your place???
We all talk about how light/dark our skies are at home or our favorite observing spot. I think it'd be great to put things in perspective and compare light levels against others.
Using the link below click on your place and post the result.

Dark site - 0.21
I don’t know how much I trust it though, I know the skies in King Lake region aren’t as dark as Heathcote due to the proximity to Melbourne but getting the same radiance value. Apparently just behind the YanYean reserve is as dark as the country regions

I believe there is something wrong with the LP map VIIRS 2017 overlay. In my case, somehow 2017 seems to display darker than the same location in 2016, which is usually impossible. I live on a green blue boundary and at the shopping centre i usually go to it has gone from yellow to green - impossible given the development around that area.
I have used this LP map for years, and each year from 2014-2016 (and previous years under the old menu) the VIIRS overlay shows the subtle progression of LP, until 2017 when suddenly it is much darker. Something wrong there.
I then looked at the progression around Tuggerah Lakes and it went the other way, getting significantly worse in 2017, which is likely out of character. Perhaps the methodology has change for 2017?
Check your self, go back and look at how your area has changed each year up to 2017.
I prefer SQM readings.
BTW i get 0.18 at Bretti where the rivers join, on the 2017 VIIRS overlay, but going back to the 2014 -2016 overlay for the same spot, the value drops to 0.06 . Since that location has no LP other than a farm house light in the distance the methodology has to have changed.
Perhaps when LP is measured is also a factor, in Bretti's case most nights its as dark as the inside of a black cat - unless its during school holidays when half of Newcastle is camped there with their LEDs lighting up the valley.

Interesting - Yes I see how it has them as similar radiance. I sometimes look at the "older" maps, usually the ATLAS 2015 (although it says "NEW" - You can select it on the menu "Base Layers & Overlays" on the screen Top right). I prefer the presentation of brightness units shown on this map as it is in mcd/m2 and also shows the equivalent SQM reading. On this map it shows the circumstances the way you've described them, as Heathcote about twice as dark (typical brightness<0.2 mcd/m2) VS behind Yan Yean Reservoir (brightness of 0.3 to 0.4 mcd/m2).
VIIRS 2017 - Home 41, Bayside nearby 2.1, Yarra Junction (Easter Visit 2016) 0.2 or better
Best

I'll go the 2016 overlay.......gives me 0.05!!!!
I suppose it's just a matter of comparing apples with apples.....if everyone quotes the 2017 figure then hopefully the info will match up

I need to find somewhere dark with decent internet I can use. I suspect there's an inverse relation though...

My home in northern Sydney suburbs is 5.23. But it says the park up the road I get to occasionally is 2.43. Its on the edge of national park. I must go there more often - says its better than the NSAS viewing site which is 3.48

1.9 in my backyard, though local lighting conditions have a big impact. Shielding the street lamp made a noticeable difference.
My previous place reads 15.4 and was noticeably worse.
