Spirals of the Rosette

Hello,

I have decided to throw my Rosette hat into the ring. There are many here who have done an amazing job on this wonderful target in a widefield format. At my Focal Length I decided to zero in on one of its amazing structures.

Elephant trunks are pillar or column-like structures that protrude from the walls of hydrogen clouds. Normally we see these as gas trunks like the "Pillars of Creation" which are mostly straight. This image centers on a trunk that has an amazing double helical structure. The rope type filaments are following magnetic fields and electrical currents causing them to bend, wave, and braid into an intricate pattern. These forces produce this beautiful spiral structure and it’s because it is backlit that we have the rare opportunity to be able to study the inner structure of dark nebulae.

Kindest Regards,

Aye Carrumba!

Very impressive Ken.

The RCOS20 is a benchmark scope for sure

Having spent considerable time on this area very recently, I know it quite intimately ...the significant FL, aperture and superior seeing evident here, all certainly make a difference, lots of little bits and pieces in there to search out, great stuff Ken

When is the fly through coming..?

Mike

Thanks for all the kind comments. I know FL is a factor but there were several processing steps to bring out the details and "spotlight" the features. I have become a masking junkie !

This is a special target for me as it was my first Narrowband APOD back in January 2005. I chose a different color map at the time. http://www.imagingdeepsky.com/Nebula...te/Rosette.htm

Also was interesting to do the research on the magnetic and electrical forces that are braiding the helical structure.

Have a great week,

Regards,

Incredible close-up. You guys keep pushing the boundaries either in composition, subject or processing and it's great to watch what you can achieve.
It shows real talent to keep this up.
