Gum 17, Vela

Hi All. Wishing to share with you objects that don't get much screen time, here's an image I collected earlier in the month from Heathcote, Vic, of Gum 17 (RCW33) in Vela just on the edge of the Vela SNR. I imaged alone with only a swarm of mozzies to keep me company!

It's LRGB 120:60:60:50 (I mislaid a blue subframe somewhere!) through my TOA130 with reducer (f/5.6 fl ~720mm)/EM-200 Temma2/SBIG11000M combination.

Lots of interest in the image. The very bright patch of emission above, a filmy haze with structure on the left and many dark nebulous areas, especially the sinuous one with structure cutting horizontally through the nebula. Trumpler 10 is the collection of bright blue stars towards upper left and there's a smaller cluster of yellowish stars lower left.

A high res version is here: http://www.russellsastronomy.com/sky...s/Gum%2017.htm

Regards and clear skies to all.

Russ

Excellent Russ, a lovely subtle region that with some nice sparkling stars.

The bright stars seem to ahve a diffuse halo around them, is this from the filters?..doesn't matter becasue it looks great actually

Nice work, sometimes it gets lonely imaging by yourself all the time, especially out in the middle of nowhere in the open just you and the sky dome above, I know, the radio and yes even mozzies can become very comforting at times ...I like to sing opera aria's sometimes (at a medium level only of course, there are farm houses with earshot on a still night)

Mike

Thank you all for you very kind comments. Much appreciated. The time I've spent playing around with image processing in Photoshop has been a good investment. So much learnt and so much learning to do.

Good comment, Mike. I took the blues rather late in the night (err, late in the morning) and lower down and they may have suffered more scattering (thin cloud?) than the reds and greens. I generally do the blues when the object is highest, but for this one, thinking the emission was the important colour I started a colour series in CCDSoft with red and just let it rip.

I like to listen to the (car) radio, too, except that last time I (unknowingly) flattened the battery and I got a nasty surprise in the morning when I tried to start up. Middle of nowhere is right and very poor mobile reception to boot . I was looking to walk the 15km into town or phone for help once reception improved, when I recalled that there might be a couple of homesteads in the area hidden away in the bush. Fortunately there was and a nice lady was home (rather surprised to see me as they don't get any through foot-traffic). Got a jump start (of the car) and all was well.

As for singing arias...well, these neighbours are definitely within earshot and I'll also take pity on the poor animals in the area trying to get some shut-eye! Don't want to outstay my welcome....

Thanks guys for your kind comments. Looking forward to doing more imaging at the forthcoming ASV's Messier Star Party, weather permitting.

Wish me luck. Clear skies to all .
