A day at Franz Josef

We walked a few hours up to the Franz Josef glacier today.

Really interesting scenery and a lovely stroll along the river bed.

The glacier is worth a look if you're ever travelling up the west coast of NZ.

It amazes me it even exists when the air temp was really very mild. I guess it would take a long time to melt such a large ice cube!!

What really surprised me was to learn the glacier is currently advancing, and faster than the average of other glaciers around the world. It's quite a dynamic chuck of ice.

I snapped an overall view, as well as a closer shot of an opening/cave at the glacier face which has been created by flowing water.

There's also an image of a rock wall found further down the river bed which I thought looked pretty cool.

Cheers.

Hi Matt

A terrific series of shots, showing the power and grandeur of glaciers as well as the grubby looking terminal moraine. Do the locals talk of the glaciers ever having receded as I have read about in the Alps in Europe and the Himalayan ranges?

Cheers

Dennis

Nice shots Matt! Despite living in Auckland for nearly 3 years and seeing most of the country, we never made it to the West Coast glaciers. Will have to go back some day!

Cheers,
Stephen
