A few New Zealand images

Hi all,

Looking at the great images of New Zealand being posted by Humayun and Matt got me looking back through my old NZ photos, and so I thought I'd post a few of mine as well. My wife and I lived in Auckland for nearly 3 years between 1997 and 1999, so we had lots of opportunities to explore the place.

Here are a few of my favourites. All were taken with my old Pentax MZ5 SLR, using Fijichrome Velvia transparency film, and the slides were subsequently scanned. The photos are:

(1) Dawn light on the 3 big volcanoes in the centre of the North Island, looking across Lake Taupo;
(2) A view of the 2 tallest mountains in NZ, Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, taken from the flight deck of a Boeing 737 on route from Auckland to Queenstown while chatting to the pilot. You can't do that anymore!
(3) Walter Peak from Queenstown;
(4) The Routeburn River, near the start of the Routeburn track. I didn't do the whole walk, but did spend a few hours along the first few km of the walk;
(5) Milford Sound. I like this image because it really shows the scale of the place.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,
Stephen

Stephen,

Again, more fantastic images. And, shot on film, to boot! Much respect.

For my eyes, the first one is a winner. There is nothing like the first rays of light on a snow-capped mountain. Well done.

The Milford shot really works to show the grandness of the place with that teeny-tiny boat (and, those boats aren't small at all!). I have some very similar shots taken in Milford Sound. Will share soon.

Regards,
Humayun

Hi Stephen

Wow, wow, wow – must get out there and climb some of those mountains. What a beautiful and inspiring portfolio – how on earth did you wrangle a visit to the flight deck of the 737?

My fave is the aerial panorama of Mt Cook and friends.

Cheers

Dennis

Nice shots, Stephen.

They certainly capture the grandeur of the New Zealand landscape. Isn't it terrific!

I have been fortunate enough to cruise both Milford and Doubtful sounds over the last few days. The scenery sent me into a photographic blitz. I've got hundreds of shots to traul through

Here's hoping I've captured a few as good as yours.

Cheers.

great pics Stephan.. my son went to NZ last year in mid winter
The shots he took around queenstown are just stunning
every one of them .. says a lot of the beauty of the place if you can't
take a lousy shot .

Dennis, this was back in the days when you could just ask, and about one in three times they would say yes!

in two weeks there, a couple of years ago, we(the family) took 1200 images..thank goodness for digital

and the Mt Cook area is simply the most spectacular -though it looks completely different in summer from these mid winter images you have posted

Thanks Narayan and Andrew.

You're right Narayan, it's definately a place where you can shoot plenty of images! These were taken in the pre-digital days and I was using relatively expensive Velvia film, so I had to be much more restrained than I would now.

Cheers,
Stephen
