Maybe it might be useful enough to be made a sticky.

I've got the long and lat for my favourate viewing site , another I've been thinking of using Catalyner Park at Rathmines , and my mum's place just outside Forster. All it took was about 10 minutes to zoom out and scroll and then zoom in to max image resolution at each spot.

Beats using survey charts .

Looks like they're using Google Maps. You can do the same thing through the google maps page.

Hi,

These days you can get a new GPS for under 100 AUD, the cost of a cheapish eyepiece. I think they are becoming or should be part of anyones kit that plans on moving around to do photo's or viewing.

My compass cost 30 bucks and on eBay i can get a GPS for maybe 50 bucks.

Hi,

Some people confuse GPS with GPS + mapping software. If all you wish to do is find your elevation and lat/long then there are many cheap options.

For example, 2 years ago i purchased a 32 channel bluetooth GPS for my phone for just over 100 AUD. These days the same unit can be had new,buy it now price, for about 50 bucks on eBay.

The previous generation 12 channel GPS's go for far less, maybe 20 bucks.

Also if you look around there are small handheld 'hiking' gps's which are very cheap. People use these as electronic magnetic compasses, they are not intended as guidance systems.

When i go to a new site i turn on my bluetooth GPS and in under a minute it has a fix which I can read on my phone.

Cheers
Paul
