ADSL where there is no ADSL

G'day all,

There's a few IT & T people in this forum (just a few), perhaps someone has an idea on how to help here...

My brother lives about 6.5km from the exchange their phones are provided via. Due to the long distance the telco's he's tried (optus, telstra, iinet) always deny him an ADSL connection, saying the line quality is not sufficient, and distance too long.

However, we know for a fact that his neighbour has in the past had and ADSL connection. They had that until recently, when they asked their telco to move the termination form their old house, to their new house just completed. Upon coming out to do the work, the technician declared that ADSL would not function that far out, and promptly disconnected them. Of course if the neighbour had known this, they would have simply run a CAT5 to the new house.

So now, neither my brother nor the neighbour seem able to get ADSL. Even though the neighbour did have it.

It seems like if they would just let them try it, it might work (probably would, it did before). But no telco they've found is willing to just do the install and try it.

I have read on Wirlpool for my own purposes that some routers have much better distance capabilities than others, some apparently working up to about 6km from exchanges.

For now, my brother is stuck on Satellite.

Anyone got any suggestions on a way to get ADSL installed, just to try the thing??

I am not surprised a Telco would not help.
Have you tried TPG? They have their own equipment, service some of Perth, I think, and have Reach Extended ADSL2 (reADSL2). If that is available in the area it would be worth speaking to them about supported modems, too.

curious to hear any responses.

I am on ADSL with Optus, have been for about 3 years but would like to go to a cheaper plan Telstra is offering. I ring Telstra and they do a check and tell me I can't get ADSL where I am.
I can not get it through thier thick heads that I have an exsisting ADSL service....go figure

If you go to Telstra, you need your head looked at !.
KEEP AWAY from them. Run to the hiils, and protect the women and children !!!.
Try some of the other mobs, you'll do so much better and cheaper.

It's a bundled package, work phones, home phones, mobiles, a frequent overseas deal plus internet.
As much as I dislike Telstra, they were the most cost affective

I work for an ISP in Perth.
If you'd like to email me your phone number I can check this for you.

When ADSL service qualifications are most commonly conducted they are checked for by the LOLO system (robot).

A manual service qualification can be requested where a 'person' will test your phone line to ensure its within the specifications for the lowest possible broadband(256k/64k).

I can't give you any guarantees by I can certainly investigate this for you a little further.

That's mighty decent leinad. Finding out DSL and information pertaining to availability and provision in your area (or any area) from Telstra is like extracting hen's teeth! They tell you nothing because of commercial interests!

I've found this the hard way.

You may have other avenues for DSL, like: there may be a RIM with a minimux/CMUX near by to which you can be transposed to? This will allow DSL...if there are free ports available in the rim and exchange! Maybe there is a shorter path transposition is available. Maybe wireless Internet is available, like "unwired"

Telstra has tightened the signal loss criteria for DSL provision (some time ago) because their copper network is not maintained as it should and is rotting in some areas...Thus greater signal degradation.

One thing Telstra will do is sell you expensive "Satellite Internet" and not tell you of possible cheaper options.

You probably already know but: http://www.whirlpool.net.au/ is a great source of info. But read up on their guides before you post there...they are savage to many Newbie's because this type of topic crops up many many times each day!

Anyway I suspect leinad will be able to advise you better than Telstra can and ever would.

Nope. TPG have no hardware presence in WA at all, they just resell Telstra ports over here.

Way back when, I worked for an ISP that provisioned business class RADSL service in Canada. We had several customers in the 5+ km range, simply because they had a heavier gauge of copper running to their house. Older/rural exchanges there tended to be run on heavier lines, which had less signal attenuation. The same thing may be the case here, explaining why your brother's neighbour was able to have working DSL at that distance.

Buy a NEXT G card for the PC. Or You can get a routers with next G and wireless built in to them. So you have the Next G signal connection going to the router and comming out with wireless if needed .

I know this works as we install and use remote web cams this way.

If you can receve a mobile signal then you should be able to get some form of internet connection.

Unfortunately I wasnt able to assist Roger with ADSL.
Every check was reported as the Transmission Loss being too high.

If looking into getting a PCMIA card (wireless) whether it be Telstra, Optus or 3 and you need a router for this, then check out Netcomms new 3G Router.

i know of a situation in adelaide of a pocket of an area were when you ask telstra or whoever for an adsl connection, they say there isnt one available for that area (right next door to flinders uni! lol) , but my friends had previously they had had it there at same address/house, but only when the account was for a business in the businesses name, same people! goes to show

so register a business name and use it? when making enquiries, dont let them know its for a private residence - it might work wonders? seems some sort of prioritisation/ pecking order - its funny tho, they absolutely deny it is available/possible still!!!! - lying so and sos

For those that can't get ADSL check out Broadband Net it is not satellite but a radio signal, the equipment is not cheap but if you qualify the government will pay the price for you and the service costs are on par with adls costs.
