Naglers for LX scopes

Hi everyone,

I am getting a LX200R and want to now from others with more experience with cat. scopes. I only have used dobs before and is it worth getting a few nice naglers for the new scope. Do they really perform better than say mid-range pieces like they do on fast dobs or is it not really that much better. I have read on a few forums that slow scopes don't really need naglers. I don't mind spending money if there is a marked improvement in quality. Your thoughts and experiences with this would be great especially any comparisons when using cat.scopes visually. Off now to find comet Holmes now.

The differences are going to be a lot less at f/10 and it's only by personally comparing the eyepieces with each other and with your disposable income in mind that you can make a clear decision. Even among the premium eyepieces there are some you will not like. If you have particular focal lengths/eyepieces in mind there might be someone here who has compared those two eyepieces at f/10.

I have used Orion Stratus Eps and Naglers on my 8"SCT (f/10) and the difference is indeed not as great as on my f/4.5 dob. It depends to some extent how fussy you are on sharpness to edge, field of view etc. In my opinion the Stratus/Hyperion EPs are about the right place in the performance vs cost curve. That is, the view is better in Naglers, but doubling the cost does not make the view twice as good. Having said that, some people will always want to feel they have the best view their scope can deliver and are willing to pay premium to get that.

It always pays to check out the difference at a local astronomy night before you buy, so you know what you are getting for your money.

Having said all that, I would probably get some Naglers or Pentaxes for that scope.

Tks guys I have decided to invest in the premium eyepieces as I don't want to get a year down the track and want to buy all over again. I thought might as well get premium pieces to bring out the most of the good optics.

Actually Naglers are more suited to Newts than SCT's. Pans are much better and give a pleasing view especially when combined with a 2.5x powermate

Have to say that I agree with RR.

With an SCT, the views with Panos are much more agreeable than Naglers. Naglers really shine with a Newt (and a Paracorr).

Hi Mark,

I hear what you're saying regarding which TV suits which type of scope the best.

So, if I had a dob (LB 12") and an SCT (125mm ETX) would either of these lenses, (naglar or panoptic), be better to buy for use with both my scopes?

Not sure if the ETX has 2" EP capability. If it hasn't then it's not a good idea to limit the LB to 1.25" EPs. The 2" format is where they shine.

Big Naglers like the 31 mm are brutes. Not for nothing are the called "hand grenades". You could get a 35 mm Pano and a good way to a Paracorr for the cost of the 31 Nagler. Not only does the Paracorr clean up the edge but it sharpens the whole FOV.

If there are no issues of exit pupil (mostly age related) then the Panoptics will give first class views and save money. Yes, there will always be the discussion of better contrast with the Naglers but there won't be any suggestion that the Panos gives crap views.
