Internet difficulties tonight. Anyone else suffering?

I'm having trouble tonight accessing sites. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. I can access IIS and Spaceweather np and plenty of other sites. Yet I have not been about to access others like Yahoo mail, Weather Bureau.

I have recently changed ISPs, but until tonight I have not had any problems.

Any ideas or similar experiences.

Update: Well Iceinspace and Spaceweather are the only ones I can access now.

now what have you done Mr Ponders. type cmd in the start run box then type ping www.iceinspace.com.au

I get

Thank h0ughy, I'll give it a go.

One thing though is I just kicked up the desktop and there are np there so it looks like it is in my laptop.

I tried my desktop and the ping requests time out but I can still access them through my favourites and by typing the url in the address bar.

Ok I switched form cable connected to the modem to wireless and things are working now.

I'll swap back over and see what happens then,

Ok I went back to the wired connection and nothing. My netgear says that it was connected but I cant access of ping anything. Shut down put in the wireless pcmcia and np.

I'll play around with some other cables tomorrow arvo and see what happens. strange though that the cable should just suddenly not work. It was fine this morning.

especially seeing as it says that I am connected. Damn machines.

Hi Paul,
Can you ping your gateway router?

Try to ping www.iceinspace.com.au.
Then try the ip 72.232.200.132. (iceinspace.com.au)
Any one's work?
If it works by number, not name, then your external DNS is not returning queries correctly.
Are you running a firewall that maybe be blocking queries?
Let me know.

Hi Adrian, pinging IIS works np as does google, but if I ping, say spaceweather then nothing. The only sites I could access were IIS and google and the Yahoo main page. I would receive notice that I had emails waiting but when I clicked on the notification to go there I would get a page unavailable notice. I unhooked my cable and put in my wireless and now np, though before I couldn't get my wireless (netgear) to work.

Pretty kookie. And frustrating

Hi Paul,
Next time it happens, open a cmd prompt and enter "tracert".
Type address of offending site, it should count the router hops to the failure point. Some internet routers will not display stats, * will appear.
Also, in XP, there is an option to "repair" the network connection.
This will flush the cache and reload your address.
Does your DNS point to the router? or to the ISP?
Also, never hurts to have a secondary DNS pointing to a different ISP, incase your ISP is having problems.

They were all offending sites Adrian

. The only two I could get were here and google. Even outlook express wouldn't connect. I tried to repair the network connection and that didn't work either.

You can open your "network connection, under status, details".
It will list 1 or 2 dns servers.
If using an automatic ip address, it should point to the gateway first.
These can be altered in TCP/IP properties.
I would try changing your primary dns to point to your ISP, see if that makes a difference.(This will by-pass the router forwarding the query) If not, just change it back to the prior setting.
No need to restart after, it configures on the fly.

Your router DNS is normally set by your ISP, this may not be alterable.

The last bit I understand

My ISP has given me a primary and secondary DNS to use.

However it looks like it is pointing to the routerDefault gateway 192.168.0.1, IP address 192.168.0.3

While looking at the network connection details it also has "Lease Obtained: 31/07/2007 6:57:34 PM Lease Expires: 3/08/2007 6:57:34 PM" what does this mean?

It means that you have (you're leased) that ip address until 3/8/2007. After which you may (or may not) get a new ip address. Don't worry about it. It's not important. You can connect to IceInSpace - what else would you need
