Aurora Borealis

I finally got around to posting my aurora shots from my time in Norway earlier in the year.
We stayed in a beautiful spot near the Russian border for nearly a week and within an hour of arriving we had already seen a faint aurora and I had bagged my first photos, things were looking promising!
Of course it was cloudy for the rest of the time we were there except for one beautifully clear evening when the aurora didn't show up

After we left there we boarded a ship for the 7 day southbound journey with Hurtigruten down the caost of Norway. We had 3 solid nights of excellent aurora viewing but it was a little tricky getting good photos from a moving ship!
Absolute success in terms of viewing the aurora but I need to go back and have some better luck with photography, happy nonetheless

Yeah it was amazing to see and it literally looked like that with the naked eye, couldn't believe how bright it was. I was also amazed at how quickly it moved and changed shape, I did a few where I was taking 2 or 4 second shots in sequence (hoping some of them wouldn't be blurry) and the difference between the frames is crazy.

It was a bit of a challenge taking shots from the ship and it wasn't a big cruise ship or anything it was like a large ferry. It's amazing what you can get away with by having a steady hand, good timing and controlling your breathing. That last one was handheld with my 5DmkII + 16-35Lf2.8@16 ISO6400 2sec: http://hughsblog.files.wordpress.com...6/img_5424.jpg

It must have been brighter and faster moving than when we saw it in early 2012. There was little colour to the naked eye and, apart from the last night, was moving quite slowly.

The first time we saw it it was faint, grey and slow moving, almost looked like thin cloud.
