Jupiter

Well, I am still very new to the world of astrophotography, but loving it so far.

Been struggling a bit with getting the setting right on my camera, Canon EOS 60D, and getting the focus working well, but seem to be getting better bit by bit.

Last night I decided it was time to sort out ISO and shutter speeds, so set up in my suburban Melbourne backyard, shook my head at all the light pollution, then got going.

Got Jupiter as focused as I could, the went and took 1000 fames of AVI at 4 different ISO speeds and at about 6 different shutter speeds for each of those! So will process them all tonight and see what works best for me... at least it gives me somehwere to start.

This image was from one of those files... chosen pretty much at random, so I hope there will still be better images lurking in the data when I do the processing tonight. (After attending a meeting at the Hockey club down the road... thanks kids for organising my life for me...) But it is my best Juipter picture yet, so just had to put it up here.

Jupiter, 17th December 2012, 11:29pm, at ISO 400, 1/250th second exposures, movie crop mode in my Canon 60D, at prime focus on my 8" LX90. Captured using BackyardEOS, and processed in AVIStacker.

Any suggestions welcomed!!

Geoff.

Well done Geoff! Being myself an newby at astrophotography, I can appreciate the great deal of effort, thinking and trial and error this involves.

Keep at it, I am sure will take stunning pictures soon!

Hi Geoff,

That's a really clear picture with nice detail.

If you want to bring out some more colour, you can increase the saturation level using your image editing software. This really brings out the orange & brown colours.

Cheers,
Mark

Mark,

Yeah... things like saturation levels are ther next step to be included on the learning curve. Having played a little with some of these photo editing softwares before and things like saturations, I am sort of leaving that for now, and trying to get to grips with the whole new world of stacking and wavelets and the like... it is taking me a while! Baby steps for now...

Thanks for the kind words people... although my wife may not enjoy you encouraging me...
