Below is a before and after of a high contrast image. I do not know how it performs with lower contrast. Trial and error maybe.

Software fixes can make a bad image better, but they can never make a great image from a bad image. The best solution to out of focus images, eggy stars etc is to throw them away, fix the problem and re-acquire the data.
