NGC 346 and 371 in the SMC.

Hi,

I like the SMC, some really nice DSO's to image.

In particular NGC 346 and 371, stunning and vibrant! Plus all the open clusters and small globulars.

I tried processing the neblae into the red but lost detail, so I left them the colour from the camera, personally i like the teal blue better.

5 and 8 minute subs at ISO 800 a total of 46 minutes.

Cheers,

Justin.

Nicely done Justin. Actually you did the right thing by not forcing these into the red because they are predominantly blue. I would probably tone the blue down just a bit though.

Lovely image Justin, I'm looking forward to more images of parts of the SMC and LMC from the photographers here - I think they're my favourites!

A question: Many images show NGC346 as teal or bluish, even when neighbouring regions show more characteristic pink emission (for example here). Anybody know why? I'd guess that it's a mix of pink emission and blue reflection from the hot stars, but it seems to be more the case in this nebula than many others? More dust with the gas?

I did some narrowband imaging of NGC 346 at a 1600mm focal length and as well as Ha it emits a lot of OIII... which just happens to be teal coloured.

Thanks Steve!

Yes, over saturated a tad, usually happens when Iv'e been playing around with the processing too much.

And thanks for that link, interesting what you pointed out and I don't know, guess I'll have to read up on this. Two other galaxies come to mind for blue/ teal nebulae, NGC 55 and barnards galaxy.

Good to know about the colour in OIII.

Cheers,

Justin.

That may well explain it, thanks very much for the info Rick!
