+1 for the book, read it many years ago , then saw the movie on the big screen ( cinema ) when it was released, the ex is/was an Jodie Foster fan so it was easy to talk her into seeing the movie. wasn't ex at the time.
Thoroughly enjoyed both and Carl Sagan was an excellent writer and scientist, goes without saying I suppose.

I'm surprised at the response this thread generated. All because of a good sci-fi movie.
I expected a few posts like, "Yeah, good movie" and "Saw the movie, book was better." LOL

However, I now understand that it has significant impact on Astro-Geeks. And for good reason.

I'm considering viewing it again and maybe buy the book.

Jen. (Or should it be Jen! insert more emoticons here) Definitely find a chance to see that movie. As far as Sci-Fi goes as a "Chick Flick" this is really one that women will enjoy and not only Astro-Geeks.

Seriously a good solid all rounder scifi for everyone really. Enough of a chick flick for the ladies, enough cool effects for the guys and enough concepts for people to ponder afterwards. Saw it at the cinema on release day with a mixed group and everybody loved it. Bought the DVD years later and still loved it. Bought the bluray recently and still love it today.


Just to hijack the thread a little also see/read K-PAX. Both book(s) and movie are great.

She actually came to Sydney, the international year of astronomy,and delivered an engaging presentation at Parramatta Riverside theater

And yes she was the model for the Jodie FosteR character. She also pointed out some embarrassing bloopers in the movie. Great presentation, so glad I go to attend.

Yeah that's one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies. I really enjoy the slow build up from the beginning and all the way until the point where they realise what's in the signal. It's all very believable I think - if we ever heard such a signal that is.

Some Contact trivia for you guys who'd never listen to the audio commentary...

The crew had "I'm okay to go" t-shirts made up after hearing it for 2 weeks while filming Jodie in the machine seat...

Jodie got quite ill after being shaken in the machine seat for weeks...

The telescope at Aricebo was so dirty when they got there they had to whiten it up digitally...

Crackerjacks hadn't given out plastic toys (referring to the compass) in the boxes for many years... So they said being Puerto Rico it'd probably be an old stale box of crackerjacks on the shelf!

For the first time ever on a movie set Jodie asked for cue cards because some of the terminology was so hard to remember...

I have a copy of this in my sifi collection , great movie !, good science that is not to far removed from the real .
I especially like the saying ,,,, " why build one , when you can have 2 for twice the price " after the 1st machine was destroyed , classic .
Jody plays the part well .

Agreed - good sci fi shows care taken to extend reality only so far. Some good twists with the plot in this one. Definitely signs of Sagan in there with the thought put into it. Had to get it out and watch again thanks to you guys
