Pacific Baza

Hello,

Well, we were hanging out the washing in our back garden in Brisbane when this bad boy arrived, being harassed by a squadron of Noisy Miners. He landed in a nearby tree so I rushed indoors to grab the camera + lens and managed to squeeze off a few hurried shots as he hopped around inside the canopy. The 7D auto focus worked wonders in isolating the bird from the foliage.

I may have over sharpened them a wee bit in my enthusiasm to squeeze out the feather detail and the exposure was a little tricky due to some back lighting and the dappled shade. It’s also been a while since I have used the 400mm F5.6 and so I lost a few frames due to the wobbles...

From the expression on his face, I think that he knew that I was stalking him – what a penetrating stare!

Cheers

Dennis

Nice shots, much better then my efforts yesterday. Yes the 400D is a bit of a handful if you're out of practice.

I think the thread title gives it away.

Baza isn't his Christian name!
The cane toad is called Bazza - This one is Cedric the Baza.
I caught one in my garden a few weeks back - they're a lovely bird.

Hi David (omegacrux) - as the other David wrote, it is Pacific Baza although my wife, a Brisbane girl, informed me that they were previously known as a Crested Hawk.

Cheers

Or Aviceda subcristata if you want to 1/ avoid confusion and 2/ show off. Of course if you really want to show off you could translate the name for those of us without an education in the classics.
