Ngc 2070

Tarantula Nebula ( NGC 2070 )
Imaged from my back yard 3rd Oct 2011.
10 x 8 minute subs, stacked in DSS and processed in CS3
Camera....Canon 550D (unmodded) @ ISO 400
Scope....ED80
Mount....HEQ5Pro

Focus is a little soft, and I'm struggling with the colour balance. I put that down to tiredness. We've been lucky with the skies of late so I've been on the night shift. yawnnnnnssss
But, it's the best I've taken of this object so far, so thought it warranted a post.

I like it JJJ. Personally couldn't tell the colours off from my own experience, since I've only managed to see about 30 seconds of NGC 2070 through an OIII filter.

Nice detail, JJJ! I expect it's difficult to get good colour on this area with an unmodded DSLR.

I'm torn Rick.
One part of me wouldn't mind modding this camera, then buy another body for day work.
But I should really take that step up and buy a ccd camera.
I do love the simplicity of capturing with a DSLR though. No dramas or complications.
Or am I just wussing out because of the CCD learning curve??
ohhhhh, might just have a nana nap and sleep on it. LOL

Good effort on this! I personally avoid imaging this and the surrounding area, it never looks tidy!

Get a mono CCD then you can spend many late (cloudy) nights trying to figure out how to successfully blend Ha into LRGB. Don't ask me how I know

Nice one JJJ, pity that with unmodded cameras it's almost impossible to get a decent red response! Are you planning to modify it? That would boost a lot the overall response..

Nice going JJJ - I've always found it difficult to get a good image of the spider.

I might invest in some coloured pencils and take up sketching instead.

When you get that camera we were talking about JJJ, you will get more detail and better colour rendering. That said, this is pretty tidy really. It is a tough area as Gray said. I always find the area has so many stars the fainter ones look like noise to me. Worth a challenge though and hence why did the 2032 and others image. Keep at it JJJ.

Great core

Hi JJ

I reckon this object is really hard to capture without blowing out the core. I can really look into the centre of this nebula and see deep into it's core well done!

Regards Paul.

Well you used it quite well then ...the use of this filter is often obvious but not here.

Can you not use PS or other to accentuate the colours a little?

Overall a tidy image and well worth the effort.

Mike

I twied, I really did twy to get the colour working for me.

re shadows/highlights.... less is more, like most of our processing tools. It's always tempting to push the data just a little bit more, then boom, you've introduced undesirable artefacts in other regions of the image.
It's a balancing act isn't it. LOL

Looking forward to finally meeting you in just a few weeks time.
