praeclarus lumen aeturnum

The light.

Cloaked, robed, hooded, hunched, and, huddled. Can you see the acolytes?

I made this image in almost knee-deep water. This is Matai Falls, in the Catlins region on the South Island of New Zealand.

This image, along with A Moment Forever Caught in Time, may be my two achievements thus far where I feel the light could not have been caught any other way.

My goal is to capture light in such a way that my photographs resemble or recreate the light found in neoclassical paintings, particularly those by Rembrandt and Eybl. While I have a long way to go to anywhere near perfecting that kind of lighting in the photographs I make, I relish moments like this where planning and waiting for the right light all comes together in execution with the click of a shutter.

Slightly higher resolution version available here.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
2s f/11.0 at 40.0mm iso200

Comments, critique, etc., most welcome.

I love your photos H, I really do. But I have to say, there is something missing on this one. I don't know what it is yet, maybe composition, angle, etc.. I'll pin it down.

One thing I extremely like, is the natural lighting effect. Spot on and captured well!!

Amazing capture H.

You definitely have the eye for the light. This type of image is great for just sitting and staring into it, it transports me to another world.

It looks great.

I think praeclarus is a completely diffferent type of image from the (absolutely jaw-dropping perfect) A moment Caught in Time image.frank

Hi Humayun,

Absolute visual poetry!

Breathtaking image!

Perhaps cropped a little too much? but nonetheless an absolute beauty.

Total respect to you, mate. You absolutely have a vision and ethic in mind when taking your photos and you stick to them.

"Moment forever caught in time" is one of my favourite photos and I think absolutely captures the light and painting effect you mention above.

This one, IMO, might capture the light, but seems to fall (pun kinda intended) short of a moment forever in terms of composition/framing/colour. Not sure exactly. Feels like it's cropped too much, I want to see more up higher. Sorry if that sounded negative

The old masters cheated H. They were editing at the brushstroke level!

With your limited technology you have done quite well.

I admire someone who wishes to go higher than can be imagined let alone understood..

Rob,

Have you worked out what it is that was annoying you about this particular one? I would fathom that it has something to do with the crop. You might be feeling that there's not enough breathing space around all four edges, or, that you want to see more of the fall above? Bit of a tough one to photograph this one without introducing crap that would take away from the centrepiece. Will have to work on it again when I get a chance to get back there.

Frank,

Haha, as you said, perhaps I shouldn't have linked that one in this!

Thanks, bud.

Eugenio,

Thank you. This is an adjunct image to The Drapery Falls. I have a few more renditions yet to post which might satisfy the more critical amongst you. It's all good!

Troy,

That is so kind of you, thanks. Also, I just noticed your STL comment in Doug's for sale thread. You are a nasty tease.

Have a look at Enchanting and The Drapery Falls for a different view on this beauty. Maybe they might be more to your taste? I still have a few more to post of this one, so, all is not lost, yet!

And, yes, I agree with both you and Frank, I think it'll be hard for me to top A Moment Forever Caught in Time. Bugger!

Also, not negative at all -- it is valid critique! I take it all on board.

Cheers.

Patrick,

Thanks! I love The Catlins. Got plenty of waterfall images from there. Look forward to heading back there soon.
