Early morning Sombrero (M104) + Sidonio'd re-pro

The half decent skies this weekend allowed me a few "engineering" nights to work on software and workflow tweaks. Before closing up last night I thought about having a go at M83, but all my backyard trees put a stop to that. M104 was begging for attention however, so I managed to run off 30:20:20:20 LRGB with 5 min subs before packing it all up.

I'm reasonably sure I can squeeze more out of this data eventually, but don't expect to have the time to do so for a while, so here is the first hack at it tonight. I think the star shapes are a combination of laziness not re-focusing for many hours and tracking.

Taken with the Newt/QHY9 through IDAS LPS from the city. I'm tickled pink with this compared to what I had previously managed with the 450D, and love the little extra scale I get with the QHY9 pixel size. 1st image is approx 50% crop, 2nd cropped ever so slightly from full frame to cut out alignment overlaps.

Anyway, haven't posted for a while, so thought I better put something up. Thanks for looking

I love this composition Rob, lovely star colours too.

The galaxy halo looks a bit too blue though.

Still a very pleasing image mate.

Thanks Carl and Mike. These were actually uncal'd subs I couldn't help throwing together quickly for a peek, then I started spending more time on it than I should once I got hooked

I'll go back to scratch with darks and flats then have another go. Thanks re colour comment Mike. I'm only just starting to have any success pulling out star and faint neb/galaxy colours, so I really only know enough to be dangerous. I must collect some decent G2V data through the IDAS and from dark skies too in hindsight to give me a better starting point.

Thanks Mark. I'm glad I stayed up the extra hour or so to get it. You never know when the next year with a clear night might be....

Went back to scratch, and didn't get any real SNR improvement. Have tried to address colour balance and stars (shape/saturation) in this version. Tried to squeeze a bit more out of the dust lane and disk, but its a bit too far for my rig.

This is one of those objects I've been dying to see in any sort of detail since first seeing B/W pics in old 70s astro texts. Man was I disappointed the first time I trained my trusty 4.5" Tasco on this one in 1980!

Thanks Ron. I don't know if they really look any better, but they're probably a bit more honest in terms of colour and background I hope.

Is that M101 you mean? Its hunting season again now for the next few months, so I'm definitely keen to get a half decent pic if I can. Quite a bit of sport from our latitude of course!!
I'll definitely be taking up that offer to check it out in the dob too! Nothing like a bit of green carpet grovelling

Hey Sidonio'd alright excellent Rob...still a bit of blue in the halo but hey I'm known to have left my backgrounds a tad blue at times so I'm not pointing the finger

Actually the res you managed is pretty good too, nice job mate.

You should check out the glob map on my M104 pages and see how many globs you can make out in your image, there looks to a be few at least

Mike

Thanks Peter. I was genuinely surprised at the tones that came out for only an hour or two of data through LPS filter from the city. I've had more time to read on processing this year and started to get my head around colour calibration. Only know enough to be dangerous so far, but having fun

Thanks Greg - I'm usually a bit more obsessive with it as there's little room for margin with the newt/heq5 combo, but happy with outcome.

Thanks for pointing this out Mike. I was aware of the image you mention, but had no idea I'd have any chance of seeing some of them. I reckon I can make out at least 2/3 of them on the zoomed TIF image, which blows my mind
I was happy enough to see another galaxy in some detail, let alone globs around it. Link to Mike's fantastic image here taken through the 6" Starfire if you're wondering what this is all about....

Thanks for that Darryl. I had a lot of fun with this one - one of those objects that has fascinated me from early days in astronomy.
