Jeff the peltier is one from Jaycar and it is the $29 i believe, (cant remember which one i bought a year ago).

Fred i posted the pic unaltered to show what it looks like right out of the camera, except that i had to make a jpg out of it under 1 gigabyte to upload it.

ok then Martin, are you gonna offer this service to IIS members? for a fee of course, do a few camera and it could make you a mint.

I look forward to seeing a 10min ISO1600 room temp dark vs a cooled dark at equal settings.. but from what I've seen already, that is AWESOME!

You should be very happy with that indeed! 10.2mp, cooled, noise free imaging camera...

Do you plan to make up a regulator so that you can set the temperature? That way you could do yourself up a dark library at a set temp and not be required to take darks more often than around every 6 months..

Duncan Doing this mod is not so easy and could go wrong

I am not interested in doing this mod on a $1200 camera and stuff it up (not that i would but the risk is always there).
What i will do is after the Snake Valley camp, and exhaustive testing, make a do it yourself article with all the measurements etc.
For this i have to open my camera again

So at the end of next month there will be an article on this site how to do this mod yourself.

Alex 1 1600 ISO dark coming up soon, and yes i want to make it regulated with a self setting teperature of about max 1C difference.

Ok while waiting for the pics to be taken i have stacked the two 10 minute pics i made last night of the Lagoon before the clouds rolled in.

Stacked with DSS average, processed with CS4 levels, curves (a lot to see the noise), shadows and highlights, no sharpning or noise removal and no darks.
There is noise visible because of the stretching and only 2x10minute stack.

the 2x10min shots of M8 show the goods... for a DSLR, 2x10min subs with no darks would normally mean noise central.. thats been stretched to show details and still is fairly clean.. the darks also show it pretty well...

Just did the cost of this project.

Peltier $18.95
Cooler with Fan $0.00 because i already had one normally about $15
Small plate of alu $3.00 ?
Insulation $1.00
Doing it $nerve wrecking

Time taken 4 hours.

Total $21.95 or $36.95 with fan assy.
When i have my camera open for the article i will replace the alu with copper and see what that does.

Nicely done!!! and Thanks for those sample shots. My understanding is that apparent noise still there is shot noise ?

I may have missed it but where have you got the temp. sensor fitted?
Are you supporting the peltier cooler weight with a bracket there secured to the camera mount hole?

The temp sensor is on the cmos and the cooler is supported with a bracket to the camera mount hole.
A cmos is very hard to get completely free of noise, ccd is easier if you get the right ones.

Hey Martin I have had a look at the way I modded the 5D and that in itself wasn't really that hard, but for it to go belly up would of cost heaps, anyway that worked fine and that is what I image with today.

If I could handle a Mod on a 5D, then I reckon I could have a go at what you have done.

Just a couple of questions if you don't mind, firstly the thickness of the metal you used, may it be copper, Alum, whatever, and I expect the insulation tape is to stop any shorts inside the camera body.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated, thanks mate

Leon i am going to take my camera apart to put a copper strip in it and make it look professional.
I will start on this today and make photo's and measurements as i go.
When it is finished i will put everything up in a new thread, photo's and all.
Then people can do it them selfs or i can consider doing it for them for a much lower price then the commercial outlets.
