Sagittarius area with 40D

Inspired by jjj...I thought I'd step out tonight and try capturing some of the the Milky Way in the same area.

A few nice clusters and other features in this one.

The best part about it? I think I'm starting to get the hang of DSS. As most of you guys know, I've not been a planets man up until now, but I'm starting to enjoy this side of things too.

Anyone want to point out some of the bits and pieces captured in this image? I'm pretty sure that's the Lagoon (M8) to the centre right of the image? M6 and M7 are to the left.

Matt, nice vista!

Gamma, delta, epsilon and lambda in Sagittarius.
Iota1, kappa and G in Scorpius.
You were correct in identifying M6, M7, M8.
M7 with central stars like an X, M6 (Butterfly Cluster) near bottom centre.
Just above and nearly touching G Sco is the globular cluster NGC 6441.
Lagoon Nebula (M8) with Trifid Nebula (M20) nearby and then open cluster M23.
Centre right, the Sagittarius Star Cloud M24.
Top right, open cluster M25, globular clusters M22 and M28.

Regards, Rob

Hi Matt
Your image shows almost the exact same region as mine (see Wide Field Sagittarius thread). Your processing is be a bit better though. How did you take your images i.e. lights, darks etc.

cheers

Chris

Not a bad start Matt, focus looks good.

There seems to be a green hue in the central region and some glow in the corners, almost looks like amp glow on the left but not sure you'd get amp glow with the 40D.
Might be a light pollution gradient.

What settings did you use?

Hi Chris. This is the result of 10 x 2min lights. I used ICNR to create darks. So the dark subtraction for reducing pixel noise occurred after each individual exposure.

Thanks Duncan. I weighed up making it a larger image, but that would have been at the expense of quality. I would have ended up with a setting of only around 60% quality if I'd saved the jpeg around 1000 pixels or higher.

Hi RB.

I used f4, ISO 800, and had my 24-70mmL set at 50mm.

The glow could have come from next door. A block of units with a lot of outside lighting.

Not sure about the green colour. It was there in the image, and I've noticed it in other Milky Way widefields. Dunno

Hi guys.

Thanks for the feedback.

I did a bit of a repro.

Took some of the green out and saved a larger version, compromising a little on image quality.

Cheers
