For your first attempt this is an outstanding result. Attention to the finer detail will provide leaps in quality.

Paul and other commentators,
I've tried to follow your suggestions last night. Although we had moon until about 10.00 p.m., the night was clear enough to try some imaging. These 2 images are imaged at 5 min subs for M20 and 8 mins for M16 - both at 800 ISO. I spent a bucketload of time on focus before shooting also.
I hope you can see improvement here but even if you can't, I'd be grateful for any other observations you can make. I aappreciate these are small JPEGS - I haven't figured out how to set up one of those online photo albums - one step at a time.
