NGC 2070 at FL 1200

Hi guys, here’s a quick 5x600s RGB test from my backyard on the Tarantula Nebula. That’s my first try at a longer FL. I usually image at 600-650mm. This one was at 1200mm and my image scale was 1.3 arcsec per pixel. I applied a slight deconvolution in CCD Stack to tighten the stars a bit. What I like about increasing the FL is that you get a better image scale and can start oversampling a bit, so deconvolution runs much better and you can dig a lot more details from the data acquired. The stars on the edge of the field are a little funny shaped and I had a little bit of flexure with the barlow sticking out.

I’m trying to work out the right spacing for my MPCC. It says that it should be 55mm +/-2mm from the CCD. I think I’m out by 3mm either way.
Would any of you guys know of system such as a “telescopic” or “helicoidal” adaptor for lack of a better term. Something that you could screw in and out with a lock nut to allow for a very precise range of spacing? I don’t know if this exists on the market. If not I’ll have to make one up.
Let me know. Thanks heaps.

Great image Marc, amazing details showing. Was this the ED80 with 2x barlow?

Focal length becomes a drug with DSO imaging. Its a challenge, hit and miss depending on the conditions, though 1200mm is hardly "deep space" material. No such thing a freezing the seeing in a 20 min sub! Once you get a taste of the good stuff, it opens up many incredible imaging opportunities...Your image Marc, shows good qualities. Does not look overdone, though a bit hard to tell with such a small image. Keep at it.

Thanks. 80mm refractor (orion ED80) with a 2x barlow cell.

Thanks for the encouragement Jase. Deep space? It is for me having never imaged anything other than widish fields. I still got my "floaties" on. I'm ready to image on a C11 soon and "take the plunge". Finally sorted out all the bits and pieces (OAG, etc...) so get ready for some real scary stuff.

Lots of detail Marc. With that setup you are getting a similar fov to my FLT110 with ST2000XCM. As far as the spacing from your chip is concerned you need to know how deep inside the camera the chip is to start with and then get spacers to suit accordingly. There are various spacers/extension tubes available.

Thanks Steve. I measured from the sensor plane. I'm off (too far) by 1.79mm. And my chip is not completely square (+/-0.2mm) not that I think that would matter much. But I'd like to get those 2mm or so down to 0 see if it does something. Can't chop the adaptor though.

It looks as though you may have to get something custom made ... surely there should be a friendly engineer on IIS who could assist you ?

Post a HELP ME thread in Equipment Discusions or ATM and DIY Projects forums maybe.

Nice work Mark,
good to see things coming together for you.
Looking real good.
Go the ED80's certainly one hell of a scope for the price.

Longer FL's hey......

But wait, you know there'll be more to come.......
Better mount, more efficient autoguiding, better ccd's, better imaging sites, better optics..................
....... no money, no girl friends/ devorce... bankruptcy...
mmmmm what a fun hobby eh!!

All the best
Rich

Thanks Rich. I have actually found the cure for all of the above (or so I think). Adaptive optics. Being marrie... err... on a budget I think that's the right course of action.

Hey Marc, that's a great effort. Interesting, using a 2x Barlow with the ED80, I must try this.

Thanks Michael. Yeah it works but the scope is a bit small to support the weight of the QHY8 and the GSO barlow. I got a slight amount of flexure in the shot. You can't see it in the reduced frame though but it's very noticeable in the full frame. The ED80 gives very sharp pictures though. This scope is definitely a bang for the buck.

Thanks Jeff. I've been litterally hammering this particular DSO for as long as I can remember (even more than M42 )... and that's the very first shot I got so clear.
