Unhappy Installing Starry Night Pro on Windows Vista

Hi All,

I am having a little trouble installing Starry Night Pro 5 on my new computer running Windows Vista Home Basic. I had it installed on my old computer running XP with no problems. Now when I installed it on Vista at first it wouldn't install at all. I then found the option in Control Pannel to install programmes that worked on an older version of Windows. This allowed me to install the programme, but when it got to the part of installing the ASCOM driver, it said that it could not use or find (can't remember which) the MSVBVM60.DLL. I have looked and that particular file is where the programme said it should be. I then tried running the programme and after entering the registration details it loads then comes back and says that it can't find the planetary data, to try re installing. I have done that several times with no change.

Has anybody installed Starry Night Pro 5 on Vista? If so did you have the same difficulties as me? Is there a way to overcome the problem? Any and all help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Paul

Hi Paul
The only advice I can offer is to check the yahoo starry night forum.
I use XP with no hassles. I have also installed the latest upgrades.
The forum has lots to say about Vista and Starry Night

I also had similar problems with Vista and StarryNight. The update which was supposed to solve the Vista problems required installation of an earlier version first. How do you update to a Vista compatible version when the non-Vista compatible version will not install?

I eventually gave up (much to Rob's disappointment - CoombellKid). Rob made a number of suggestions which may solve your problems:

They did not solve mine.

I am now using Voyager instead which installs fine under Vista.

Cheers

Hi,

I'm running Starry Night Digital Download 6 under Vista Home Basic 32 bit (laptop) and Vista Home Premium 64 bit (desktop). Installed and runs fine except for some graphical glitches on the laptop which I haven't really investigated as yet.

Hi Paul, I am running vista an had a bit of trouble for a while but mainly getting it to run my scope and would often time out and shut down or freeze and that was after the update.
However Darren (Wombat in space) showed me a tip for problem programs with vista and he did something like, right clicked and went into properties and went into compatibility and changed it to XP compatibility and it seems to be running fine now.
One small thing it still will not let me register so I won't bother.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Daniel.

You didn't answer my question - are you running an Ati Radeon graphics card? If so, you may have the same problem I did - the Vista drivers are not compatible with OpenGL - which SN needs in order to operatre. I downloaded an application off the Ati website called "Catalyst". I ran the app and it installed the newest drivers and left me with an application that lets you configure your graphics environment.

Starry Night magically worked after this.

Hi All

OK Chris sorry I took so long to reply, been busy with work. I am not running an ATI Radeon graphics card.

I have tried going to the preferences of the install programme and intall it under XP but I still get the same problems. I will keep trying a few things, but otherwise I might look at going for another programme, give some Aussies a go. Anybody know what Star Atlas Pro is like?

You also need to right click on the instal file and select XP compatability mode and run as administrator and it will work OK.
