The Great Mystery!!!

Hi,

As stated in another thread, I was out imaging M42 tonight and after I captured all my images I moved the scope over towards the Southern Cross and noticed the following. Does anyone recognise it, sorry about the image .

Let me know

Thanks

Daniel...

My guesstimate would be the Jewel Box Cluster NGC4755, more information here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_4755.

To my fairly untrained eye.

I'd say it looks like the Jewel box as well, here's a better link within this catalogue for identification. You can sort by various parameters including constellation BTW.

Errr - I beg to differ. It had me stumped there for a while, as I was looking around in Crux - to me the Jewel Box has a characteristic A-shape formed by its brightest stars, which I did not see in your image.

Rather I reckon you took a shot of NGC3766 (mag 5.3) just over the border in Centaurus - I have attached a CdC screen copy to about the same orientation as your image - I believe this is a better fit...

It is NGC3766 - The Pearl Cluster.
Paul Mayo took this shot of NGC3766.

The two orange stars on the outskirts are giveaways. NGC3766

Here is a close up of the Jewel box.
