skyscout mounted on dob?

Hi all,

I was wondering if it would be possible to mount a celestron skyscout onto a dob, turning it into a cheap manual goto? I've got the chance to acquire a brand new skyscout for $300 and it seems like a good idea. That way I could get a beginner friendly large aperture for a reasonable price. I suppose that even if it wasn't perfect, it would put me in the general area with the use of a wide field eyepiece. I also have the option of a celestron 8se for around $1300, of course for $1000 I could get a big dob with the $300 left over for the skyscout. I suppose this is irrelevant if the skyscout doesn't work very well when mounted on a telescope. Maybe I should just get the 8se at a good price and save up for a REALLY big reflector when I get aperture fever. I'm told it happens to the best of us...

Any comments much appreciated.

Go for the Dob, but I think a finder would be better value. The use of a Skyscout would just function as an expensive Telrad.

I think Paul is right. While the skyscout looks good and I've seen it mounted on a binocular tripod (great for the wide FOV of binoculars), I don't think it would perform like a set of DSC's.

I haven't used one, but it won't tell you where to point to find something, rather just tell you what you're pointing at, or am I mistaken?

others have tried and from what I recall it doesn't function well close to a hunk of metal..nice thought but wont deliver what you want I'm afraid

The skyscout can direct you to an object. You enter an object and it tells you to point up, down, left, right etc.

This guy seems to have done what you want, but with mixed results
