n my case, The Crank Position Sensor was 'acting up." The Sensor which is a magnet - had become dirty with metal dust. Thus giving the computer a false reading. I simply unscrewed it, wiped off all the black dust build-up and viola - fixed.
If you can find the sensor, it should be exposed and visible - somewhere on the external of the engin - (it has one wire coming from it) unscrew it and clean it.
And for a low price of $20, a product called FIXD which pairs with your phone is - quite reliable.

Actually they are in a variety of places. On most of the older Nissans which still had distributors, the sensor is inside the distributor and the sensor is an optical device. Later ones have the sensor in a housing on the front of the engine, plugged in to a spline on the front of the exhaust cam (Optical again) Later ones again will have at least two sensors, one for the crank (Which might be reading teeth on the flywheel and these are the ones prone to picking up iron filings) and at least one on a camshaft as you need that to see where the engine is in the cycle for fully sequential ignition and injection. And it just gets more complicated from there.

I couldn't find a free odb app that did what I wanted. Most of them wanted more cash for more features and then only some odb readers can access airbag/safety systems etc. There is no cheap way out that I could find. About $220+ for quality. If you can use it over and over then maybe.
