Jupiter reprocessed 8/7/06

This is from the same set of images I captured the other night. The original posting (Image 1.) was a preliminary run through of an original avie in Registax and a very quick PS touch up to deal with grain and colour. This new image is from 6 min later but taking a bit more care. Still not happy with the colour, and still suffering from the blue rim of .

Details;
Meade 8" sct, seeing 4-5/10, PEP @ FL 7500, f/37.
10fps, 1/25sec exp. Best 400/1200. Avi converted to bmp with virtual dub, PCFE and RGBshift (thanks Adam your a champion) for initial centering, cropping, quality, and rgb split. Registax for r, g, b bmp processing, moderate wavelets 5;25 & 6;40. LR decon, gamma adjustment and recombine in Astra Image. Curves, hue and sat and despeckling (to remove some grain, lost some detail in the process) and jpeg conversion

I hope it looks ok as processing on this laptop is a bit touch and go with the gamma adjustments.

Very nice Paul! I was wondering how you got the image scale so large, but then I realised you used positive eyepiece projection!

The second one is nicer, I just did a quick play in PS with curves (to add some more contrast), colour balance and hue/saturation to give it more of the look *I* like. But of course it's subjective.

What I'd really like to be able to do, without darkening and losing the limb too much, is darken the colours and increase their intensity. To me it looks like there is a thin coat of white wash over the top. Darkening the colours is easy but using level, contrast, curves etc eats into the limb.

I'll get there though.

I've been surprised at what image size I can get with the 8". I'd love to have one of those really excellent nights and see how far I can push it. Atm this scale seems to be the maximum I can go and still keep the detail acceptable. If I get a chance today I'll post a smaller image that I took earlier.

Paul to preserve the limb, I use a circle selection area with a feather, and select inside the planet.

Not sure which image I prefer here. The top image seems to have better detail, but the second is smoother and for me more aesthetically pleasing. The second one definately appears less grainy because of the resampling down.
