I would not be surprised if an ADSL modem has similar CPU limitations.
Not certain where you are going with this as the OP didn't state that he was running an RPi...

Could not find a N640 on their website.

The NB604 has 4x10/100 ports... if this is your modem, then your limited by the ports. Oddly enough, the 802.11n max speed is 300Mbps, which means you could download via WiFi 3X faster than ethernet, but still not as fast as a direct USB2 connection.

Raspberry Pi was just an example how CPU speed crippled the external HD speeds. Overclocking the CPU had a direct relation to the file copy speeds.

ADSL modems likely have even slower CPUs and this may be the limitation. It certainly was with mine, I could watch the CPU load go to maximum when accessing the HD. For comparison a (cheap) $200 NAS (Synology DS216j) has dual-core 1GHz CPU.

Bojan, what speed do you actually get when copying from/to the HD connected to your ADSL modem? If it is about 10MB/s then the limitation is the 100Mb network port.

Yep, N604 is my modem and 640 was a typo.. I am swapping characters all the time
10/100 definitelly explains the difference in speed.

its how Window works since XP, nothing to do with writing YOUR files, by default Windows 7 onwards does things like assign a recycle bin area on USB devices differently to XP so you dont get the problem under XP because it doesn't "see" the files that are already "opened" by Win7. Just use safely remove always and dont argue. Sooner or later you will lose valuable files for not being a little more patient. Just yet another reason why upgrading from XP is not really vital.
