I'm a bit different. Rather than SW listening I do a bit of FM band DX. New Caledonia and Pacific FM stations often come through with the summer E's season.

Also Papua New Guinea.

Excellent. Even the AM band can be fun when the antenna is long enough. :-)

That's true. Actually, any band can be fun, from DC to daylight. If you tune lower than the AM broadcast band it's possible to pick up LF aircraft beacons. Some of the larger ones have ATIS for local weather. Up in VHF on the air band also. Listening to air traffic traffic can be fun.

Back down on the bottom end on VLF there's some fun to be had too. I used a cylinder antenna and the PC's sound input with spectrum Lab to tune into stuff below 24 kHz. Listening to or rather "looking" at the local power grid via the waterfall display can be fascinating, believe it or not. There's all sorts of stuff going on down there. Get away from the local power grid and natural Earth sounds become possible.

Here was my setup from a few years ago.

Fascinating stuff, and I'm impressed by the degree of patience necessary to roll that coil!
