I fitted the longer bolt I got (dad grabbed one for me ) today, the existing one was giving me the you-know-whats as it was unscrewing itself after only about 1/2 a turn of the base, and had to be done up tight. The super sliders have made a massive difference to the azimuth motion. I need to add a few more milk bottle washers to the center bolt to add some height to the stack, but other than that they are a good upgrade!

I think the GS company should forget about Roller Bearings on their mounts. They are pretty useless! We have all replaced them with Teflon sliders. They should too.

I think it was Darkplague that had teflon on his 12" gs, maybe they got the message.

Bout time Slick. They don't improve Azimuth, they just make it Zooooommmmm around in the wind! Probably a good advertising gimmick at the time.

Just wanted to say thank you to the lads on this thread. As a beginner who is still a couple of months away from getting his Dob, I just wanted to say how good it was to read genuine feedback from real people about real issues and offering possible fixes. As a newbie I really appreciate it

Source for 0.25 mm chrome mylar for ALT bearings.

Dave,

Is there a ready source for that mylar material with which you wrapped your alt bearings? How does it adhere?

Any other alt bearing "wraps" folks found work? My GSO alt motion is better after changing to bigger teflon, and moving the pads "down" just a hair. still, the staple worked up a bit recently and gouged the bearing on one side. I think there is a slight rough spot in the alt motion as a consequence, and I'd like to upgrade the surface without trying to grind down some ebony star strips...which sounds like way too much effort..since I can't find any thinned strips soon.

The ring is the same diameter as the rocker box and is 50mm wide.
This ring rides on the teflon. I also still use the centre washers but as i said are much smaller. Weight of the whole scope and mount is much more evenly distributed now.

I also put .25mm chrome mylar on the altitude bearings which has made these very smooth also. They where pretty good anyway.

Scott,
I work in the printing industry. The chrome Mylar was some off cut from work.
I have now removed the Mylar! And found that the scope moves better without anything on the alt bearing. BUT I do put a bit of armoural on the bearing and polish it off and found this works just as well.
I do find people have different ideas for the bearing surfaces. Just try a few ideas and you will find something that works for you.
Yes the Mylar is self adhesive. Good to see old threads reborn. Can give some people ideas.

Mill had a good idea see this thread,http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...ad.php?t=17999

I have moved his scope at it's very smooth. I tried it but found it did not work for me
