I have one lens with a plastic retaining ring on the front element and it has been glued. I decided to leave it as it is, it works but has a little mould. I haven't figured out how to remove the ring without destroying the glass.

Try with isopropil or Methylated Spirit to loose the glue (usually it is shelack or similar)

Ah, primary ingredients for French polish (shellac and methylated spirits), I'll try that, thanks!

Old time methods, I even used to have a glue pot but that stuff stank, hot glue sticks and guns are so much easier than melting down horse gelatine.
