At the time I went into Bintels to buy the book I had the cash to buy, however so that I didnt leave empty handed I left Bintels with 3x barlow instead. I'll have to wait till next pay to buy it.

I should be grateful that there ARE no astronomy shops anywhere near me so I don't have to resist the temptation. As it is internet shopping is way too easy as well, as my credit card bill clearly demonstrates.

abe books has this title pop up now and again .. there was one around
the $50 aus delivered this week I think ...

Just recieved burnhams vol 3 to complete the set today .from the US .. NEW .. like the other 2 weirdly .. never been opened a $1.95 plus postage ($12 aus total ) .. you do have to search often though most of the reasonably priced offerings get snapped up quickly

Man, I have really bad GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). I'm a sound engineer and musician so I have it real bad. I have more guitars than I could play. I own a home recording studio the Beetles would have killed for. But I can see the astronomy thing is going to be just as detrimental to my bank account. Thank the God's that the Asto shops dont do interest free credit is all I can say.

I got my copy right here on IIS from memory for $85!!! thanks Striker!!

At the time when I was checking around for it. You could get it for $87.00
for the aussie printed version. Or US$275.00 from some printer in the US.
I had have a chuckle about it, I think it was the only Astro investment we
could make that was cheaper than something from the US.

It's a must have book if your in the southern hemisphere, I think the rights
were eventually sold to the US publisher. And as it is mainly southern sky
objects not too many northern hemisphere folks wanted it.

Same thing happened to the HB star atlas, Aussie maded then sold off the
a US publisher and now not distributed in Oz, although that may of changed.

Be aware there are two versions of this book. The original by Hartung and
the second edition updated by David Malin and David Frew.

The original edition was a very modest book, unlike the lavishly illustrated 2nd edition by Malin and Frew.

I remember borrowing the original from the local library. It was one of the few practical observing guides available in the late 60's and 70's. The other was Menzels Field Guide to the Stars and Planets, which included a model to calcualte the positions of the planets in the days before PC's and planetarium programs.

The original Hartung would, I suspect, be of only historic interest. The Malin and Frew edition is much much better.

I could go on to say that the original is as rare as hens teeth, but that will mean that about 100 icers will put up thier hand to say they have one. Still, I have only seen 1 copy over many many years.

There you go William, you only had to have a peek at Ron's bookcase on any of the many many times you've been there. (chuckling) We should have known you'd have it Ron - what other gems have you got tucked away?

When Joy finally hands my present over I must bring it up so we can have a look at the 2 versions together. Mind you she has an email from Melbourne Uni Publising to say they have processed her order, I'm still hoping that means that stock IS confirmed but it does not actually SAY that. My fingers are strenuously crossed.

Steve, I have origanal editions of Carl Sagens Comet and Cosmos, also a copy of the Origanal NGC IC Catalogues 1 and 2, as well as some other interesting books

Bad news. Melbourne Uni have just emailed me and my order has changed from being processed to unavailable! Another avenue bites the dust. Hopefully you might have got their last copy but I think the chances are slim.

My girlfriend has been away in Adelaide for the last 2 weeks, she ordered the book the day she left Melbourne. She's back in Melbourne again now and emailed Melbourne Uni Publishing to see what was happening. Here's part of the reply:

"Dear ....

Thank you for your internet order. Hartungs astronomical objects ....... ........ is not available at the moment. The report is a reprint is under consideration but no date for a release. You are recorded to receive a copy but I cannot confirm when this will be.

Regards .... "

Oh well - I may not have a copy of Hartung's on the way, but I do have a wonderful girlfriend, and even better she will be back here in Qld with me in a week !!

I remember trying to order the HB star atlas through the same folks a
couple or three years ago, and got the same answer.... I wonder if
they still have me on their waiting list. The bottom line is, if they get
enough interest and orders for that book they will happily reprint it....
it all comes down to money. One or two inquiries aint going to do it.
