Nice detective work there Mike!
Goes to show what dedication can produce in the right hands... well done!
Make one wonder what more could be discovered if we all turned our attention to deeper imaging of rare & unusual targets instead of just hammering M8, M20, M42 & co....
Maybe there’s a paper in that!

Totally agree, always pays to scrutinise your data I have done an interview and photo shoot (at my observatory) for Fairfax, so a story about the discovery will likely appear in print soon

It's all very well being published in such arcane journals as "Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias" (IAC), but when you get a headline in such an august journal as the "Brisbane Times" - well then you KNOW you've hit the big time!
"Former strongman who discovered galaxy makes new astronomical find"

Congratulations, Mike!

Well done Mike! I am wondering with close inspection how many other PNe's you might find similar extended structures on?? A lifetime of work there!!

Absolutely, in fact I am part of a team (occasionally) that looks for just such things.
I confirmed THIS ONE a little while ago in fact
Also THIS ONE but Don Goldman then went a little deeper from Siding Spring with his 20" CDK

Appeared in the free community paper The Chronicle, too...with a different photo...I look like a "farmer wants a wife" candidate ...and apparently, as one work mate described, I look like I am in a wheelchair outside a dunny....
