My first image taken tonight before the clouds rolled in using a Canon 450D unmodded. I took owner ship of this camera the other week but my t ring and adapter only arrived today. The image is made up from 38x15 sec subs, focus is close but not spot on I had very little time to work with. My 6.3 reducer has not arrived so the image is at F10 using my 9.25 SCT. Also I used JPG not RAW for my first attempt so I assume that will effect quality.
I have notice that black is a little washed out and grainy, how do I start working on cleaning that up

Great photo of M42... The core is not blown out.

For noise reduction I use imagenomic Noiseware Pro. It does the job very well.

Very well done Carl per Maruisz's comment the central region is clear so much so that you can see the trapezium, most of us always over expose this region and its nice to see it clearly here.

As you say, start taking images in RAW, make sure to equalise them with a similar amount of DARKS and BIAS subs, that should give you a noticeable difference. Be sure to download the beta version of DSS in order to stack RAW images, if you don't already have it let us know and I'll point you to the right link.

Hi Carl,

Great to meet you today, I will be very keen to see your images once you get fully set up and have guiding working and the 6.3 reducer.

As mentioned try a range of ISO's and layer mask them together to achieve a nicley balanced image that doesn't over expose the core as well.

Also when your free make sure you come down to a BAS meeting as there are heaps of people (beginners to advanced) that can assist with your journey and we have some interesting meetings as well as the club events to get you in the field where you can share your experiences and learn from others.

Thanks for the guide scope and it was also good to meet you. In the new year I hope to get in touch and come over to some meetings. I have made a temp bracket to mount on the SCT until I get to the full mods on the original. I have just taken 80 x 30 sec subs using the guide scope and I am taking darks now. My dec motor requires a new oring and could not drive the whole package due to slip so I could only guide in RA hence 30 sec subs. I will process later and post the image up.

Hi all, tonights image of Orion with 76 x 30 sec subs, 40 x 30 sec darks. The image is much deeper and has greater detail than the first. Any comments help would be great.

Nice going Carl. Focus looks a little off compared to the 1st one.

I would concentrate on sharpening the skills for capturing and ensuring focus is good, correct exposure, good polar alignment and tracking (including guiding). When these start coming into play, then start exposing longer.

My own personal experience I have found frustration in trying to jump too quickly. Get the basic skills sharpened and this has helped me more than the software processing side. But that's me anyway.
