Cheap(ish) green laser module

Oatley electronics are selling a 5mW green laser module for $89 AUD suitable for a DIY sky pointer project. Look for LMG1 on this page: http://www.oatleyelectronics.com/lasers.html

Not particularly appealing, considering you can get a complete 5mW unit for $99.

hi Guys,

1) Is a 5mW lazer strong enough for showing people around the sky, especially in light poluted Sydney?

2) is it possible to use one of the lazer colluminators for 'sky pointing'? What power are they normally?

Glenn

Maynard,

Who is Andrews Antenna?

I have googled the name and came up blank for lasers at all the Andrews Antenna listings. Do you possibly mean Andrews Communications? (Lee Andrews)

If I can find a cheap laser pointer I would be interested in one for out Astro Association.

Fair enough, but it might be worth keeping an eye on the page though, if the stock does not move the price will drop. Though this is probably unlikely due to their popular laser effects kits that can utilise this module.

1) Maybe, it depends on the size of the group. I use a 10mW model and the beam is clearly visible from 3-4 meters to the side of the beam.

2) Maybe if it's a green one, you'd have to ask the supplier about the power specs. A red collimation laser is not suitable for use as a sky pointer.

Just won an ebay auction for a 5mw green laser for $51

It looks like the same one that Bintel are selling going by the photo of the packaging.
