Northern Hemisphere Sky

Hi All

Gina & I recently returned after one month in The Philippines. During that time we took the opportunity to look at the night sky. Although we only had binoculars and a 3" reflector (Ebay junk), it was cool seeing the constellations the right way around.

The interesting thing we noticed was that although we were in the Northern hemisphere, we were still south enough to see the Southern Cross, rise & set each night.

It was pretty cool seeing the faces on Gina's family when we showed them the moon, Saturn & Jupiter. They were so into it, that we left them our ebay scope. It's a shame our 10" Dob was impractical to take with us. We could have all had some fun with that.

I have a lot of catching up to do on IIS. I hope your all well & we hope to see some of you at Kulnura next meet.

Cheers Paul & Gina

G'day Paul,

Last time I was in the "other" hemisphere, I marveled at how weird things looked. The triangle made up of Deneb, Vega and Altair was quite high in the sky and the W of Cassiopeia was easily seen. And Sagittarius was low in the south. Someone had their scope set up on M11 claiming it was the best in the sky...I was a good lad and refrained from laughing out aloud!

Peter.

That is a matter of perspective...I grew up in "the north" and I still struggle with seeing it upside down...

I have to agree with you, I was born here and I struggle with it. Seeing Orion the way it was "designed" was exciting.

Cygnus is a funny one. It is a northern constellation but it is the right way up when viewed from the south. Deneb is the tail and Alberio is the swans beak. It is quite impressive in a dark sky flying up from the horizon.
