NGC 281 (pacman nebula)

Here's another one hot off the press from Arizona, the emission nebula NGC 281 which is commonly known as the pacman nebula although I think it more resembles some deep sea angler fish. In any case it's a very interesting object with tons of fine detail and I'm looking forward to doing some colour when the moon goes away. Of course it would look great in narrowband but this camera doesn't have any narrowband filters.

Cheers

Steve

Looks great, Steve. The details in the dusty bits are very nice.

Is it a dim target? Seems a bit noisy in the fainter areas and 320 mins Ha at f/4 is a fair amount of exposure time.

Thanks Rick. I believe it is fairly dim. What noise there is I guess would have resulted from me stretching a bit too much. I'll attempt to clean it up a bit.

I don't think it detracts from the image, Steve. I was just interested to know.

Great shot. Such a cool object. It's got everything in one. Bok globules, dark lanes and heaps of Ha in such a small area. Shame we can't see it from here. I remember the W of Cassiopea back home being straight up.

Thanks Marc. Yes it's one of the north's best I think

No problem Rick. I thought a bit of smoothing wouldn't do it any harm.

Thanks Ross. It's a new one for me too. Very popular object in the North apparently. I'm looking forward to doing colour.
