Stupid Gardening Question

It really is stupid.
Does plant in "Part Shade" mean dappled shade like near a tree or shady for only part of the day - like on one side of a building?
Plants baffle me.
You can stop laughing any time.

With grasses, it's usually hours of direct sunlight per day, so "part shade" in that case is something like 2-3 hours direct sun per day for decent growth, assuming it's a species that'll survive in those conditions. Some grasses don't tolerate shade but most (all?) thrive in full sun.

For other plants, I don't know, but I'd guess it's hours per day, unless it's some rare and delicate plant from the floor of a rain forest or similar.

Confused yet?

Here's a thought - why not search for "<plant name> planting conditions" or "<plant name> sun shade tolerance" and so on. That's how I learned what grass species to plant around the house.

Edit: Just saw your last reply.

It's always good to look at the natural habitat of a plant to get an idea of what it wants in terms of shade and soil conditions.

Also, beware of common names like 'Foxglove' when searching for plant details, they can mean different things in different countries. If by Foxglove you mean Digitalis purpurea, they grow in Northern hemisphere temperate regions, and are fairly tolerant of moderate shade to full sun in those regions.

In AU their main enemy will probably be the heat and dry, so I would err on the shady side.

Also, FYI, they are highly poisonous.

Following on from that, they probably be OK with morning sun but afternoon sun could burn them. Also consider what is around them. My eastern fence is brown colourbond so anything up against that fence has to put up with the afternoon heat plus the reflected heat from the colourbond. I've killed a few delicate plants that way but things like Banksia and Accacia go quite well there.

Thanks guys.
I am aware that Foxgloves are poisonous, but they're just so handy (along with Snap-Dragons and Hollyhocks) for covering joins in the fencing!
Have pretty much got the spots sorted so now its just "plant and wait".
