3-10-12 Milky Way with Fisheye lens

Hi all, this is a 35 second exposure taken with Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens and Canon 5D MK II at ISO 1600. There isn't any vignetting with this lens even when wide open. The zodiacal light can be seen at bottom right.

Here is a image of Aurora Australis taken on the 1-10-12 with the same lens, south of Pt Lincoln. this was a 29 second exposure with camera at ISO 3200.

They're both lovely shots Lester. Interesting how the fisheye distorts the horizon in these, but that large edgewise spiral looks nicely preserved - what's the NGC number on that one ?

Thanks David, yes I enjoy the perspective the fisheye lens gives. Other than the distortion at the edges the image quality is very good even when wide open. All the best.

Great shots Lester.
Personally I'm not a fan of the fisheye curved horizons (which is why I prefer the Samyang 14mm).

Any reason why you use the Canon 15mm over the Samyang 14mm now?

Hi Mike, I have just got this lens so trying it out and was keen to see what star images it produced wide open, plus vignetting. Mainly got this lens for my aurora trip next year as they can at times fill the whole sky.

I agree the 14mm Samyang without any distortion is excellent, but just doesn't cover the sky area of the fisheye. All the best.

Thanks Mike and Laurie for your comments. I agree Mike regarding the colour of the first; the second had to be pushed really hard to extract the faint aurora. All the best.
