Solar Filter for Canon EOS 1000D

Hey everyone,

I have been doing a bit of research where I can and when I can (time permitted) and I am planning on having a bit of fun going to try image the solar eclipse. I live in Darwin so hoping to find a nice area to get some images of it.

I am going to buy some of the glasses from Ice in Space purely for viewing with the naked eye, but I am also planning on trying to image with the EOS 1000D if I can manage to get everything sorted before then. I believe I am going to need a Solar Filter for the lens, but I am unsure of where I can get one, I have tried searching around for them but I don't specifically know where to find them. If you need any details about the lenses I have let me know (I'll have to dig them out after work.)

Is there also anything else I will need for protection on both my camera and myself while imaging this beautiful object?

Use one half of solar shades/glasses ;-)
Just mount it on the lens somehow.. as per Jjjnettie

Thanks for that guys, I was just hoping there would be one I could buy instead of make myself. That being said, if that's the only option I'll give it a go.

Thats what i did works perfectly, I made one for my dslr lens and one for my finderscope using the solar glasses.

Hi Jarryd - I just bought a spare lens cap, cut a hole in it and securely taped a piece of Baader AstroSolar Safety Film on the inside.

I got the cap from a box of spares at a camera shop. You need a cap that's the right fit (obviously!) and that isn't too complex a design on the inside - ie no impediment to cutting a hole, and if you cut a hole the tabs still work. I have a Canon DSLR but the lens I use for solar is a Sigma 55-200mm. The filter works really well and is nice & secure.

If you have access to a Canon 100-400L lens, the solar filters that fit an ED80 refractor fit perfectly into the end of the lens hood!

This may be able to be repeated for other standard filters that fit into the end of refractors, may also fit inside the end of your lens hood. Measure the inside diameter of your lens hood and see if you can find a match.

Worked quite well for the Transit Of Venus hand held, and have been able to image a couple of spots quite well when tripod mounted.

Of course taping it on is highly recommended!
