Internet problems

Hi All

For a week now the interenet has been virtually unusable from about 9:50 AM til 10:50 AM. Before this date I have been noticing the occasional difficulties around this time.

It takes as long as two minutes to load a page (if you can) and download speed drops to less than dial up speeds.

After around 9:45 the speed suddenly returns to full ADSL.

Has anyone else noted this.

Barry

I am not sure what you are using to test if any, but if the problem occurs trying speed testing. I use www.speedtest.net. It now has a Telstra server for direct testing with my ADSL.

It maybe you have congestion issues but this is only one offering over many others.

The Taskmanager has got a Network tab. Does any of your computers show acitivity in that tab during that time?
could some regular download attempt on one of your computers be causing this?
Windows Update Service, maybe?

Barry sounds like you are with telstra, I had the same issues when I went across to them. I found that they had just too many subscribers for the bandwidth available, at least on my exchange. I went back to my original provider and then returned to my full adsl2+ speeds.

Yes that is the problem. I don't know if it is my local exchange or futher down the line but gather it is the period after 0.00 GMT when all the daily spam is scheduled to clog up the internet. I was just wondering if others have the same problem. It can be a nuisance if you are bidding on ebay and miss out because the email waits too long.

As for the other suggestions. The computer itself is running in idle 99% and the speed of download is from real sites that suddenly go from 600KB/s to 3KB/s and stay there till the traffic jam ends in about 45mins and then jumps back up to 600KB/s again. I do know the speed test site but there are many other variables that can give misleading results there.

Sounds like you are experiencing a typical backhaul congestion - too many subscribers for the bandwidth available as Peter explained.
I had the same issues for nearly 12 months - my internet provider Internode was running on Optus gear.
In June Internode installed their own gear at my local exchange & everything is sweet now rock stable with great speeds.

at least you guys have the option of using other servers , we up here in the NT have Telstra , Vodafone and optus , and both VF and Optus are confined to the greater Darwin area , as soon as you get out a bit its only Telstra so most are stuck with it , its very annoying putting up with their ups and downs , and its mostly DOWNS !!! here ..

Hi Barry,
I had similar issues with my internet speeds, but only with IIS pages, and only since some small changes were made to the forum.
All other internet was use was OK and fast ( 13 mbps)
It was suggested to me that I try another browser such as Firefox which has cured all my issues.

Hope this helps.

Geoffro.

We have cable (internet) ....in last week it has been very dodgy at best.

Yes, in a word: Telstra

If you bought a car that was advertised to do say, 275km/hr ...and when you floored it, you got say 60km/hr....there would be serious grounds for complaint & compensation.

Yet the swines get away with slow data speeds again, and again, and again...

I have had that trouble with ISS for some time now. IE8 takes about 10 secs to load the first page but firefox is instananeous. However download speeds are quite normal. I find this also on some other sites.
