Jupiter 20/4

Wow, some nice pics of Jupiter being posted recently. Here is my contribution which is my best ever. I am thrilled at how my scope is performing now.

Hi David

I don't have tracking. I aim the Dob mount at the planet and then just aim the camera down the eye piece using my other hand to steady and position the camera lense. I track the planet accross the middle 1/3 of the field of view. I use 10 x optical zoom on the camera. With both eyes open I can align the the viewfinder window with the edge of the scope. I can repeat this about 5 times within 2 minutes for about 1500 - 2000 frames. Most of the time the planet is in the centre of the frame. I then use Virtualdub to review each frame and delete those I don't want. Then I let Registax do the rest. Its tricky but after a couple of years of pratice Ive got quite good at it. One recent trick is to save alligned frames as an avi in Registax and then re process this avi using the 'rotate' option on the alignment page using say a 128 alignment box. This helps to remove some of the field rotation I allways get with this method. I still believe I would get better results with a tracking mount and aToUcam, so this will be the next stage of development.
