14mm fun at the beach

My brother and family were up last weekend. We spent the morning at Currumbin beach. Decided to have some fun with the 14mm Samyang manual lens on my 5DII. It's wiiiiiiiiiide and I think gives a fun perspective for these sort of shots. All of these shots I was standing only a metre or 2 from the kids.

I think my 2 year old, Hayden, has got a good swerve on him. Might make a footballer out of him yet?

Thanks Lester. I had only done some landscapes with the lens prior to this. I just manually focused in the right ballpark and set the aperture down a couple of stops before trying to shoot. The very short focal length gives a forgiving depth of field.

Very cool Troy. I'm usually not one for shots with kids in them, because they're usually far more interesting to the parent than the viewer - but these are great. I like the perspective, and I think that as far as genuinely interesting shots of family go, these work. The Samyang is an interesting lens on the 5D-II, if I decide to keep my 5D-II I might just have to investigate one of these.

Thanks mate. Yeah, I am a bit reluctant to bore everyone with my family photos, but I know a few guys have bought these lenses lately so thought I'd post more for the lens than the family.

It's really surprising how close you have to get for these shots. That one with Ella jumping off the sand, first couple of shots I was maybe 2m away and she was practically a spec in the shot. I really needed to get right under here about a metre away or closer to make it work, and camera practically on the sand.

The shot with Hayden running was similar. I was actually running alongside him, hunched over with camera nearly on the sand, yelling at him to look at the camera. must've looked quite a site for spectators.

These wide fields with up close on people have really worked out well,giving viewing a real feel of where you went and had fun.I've never used my 10-22 mm for this type of shot,must try that.Neat images

Nice collection of shots!
Different perspective these 14mm allow that you have created!
Can see what you mean with the very deep depth of field.
Might have a look into obtaining one....

Cheers mate. Good value for money, but fully manual aperture and focus. I think the above were shot at around f/4-f/5.6.

These are great! Well composed - which is difficult to do with people prominently in frame at 14 mm!

So clear and sharp! The wide angle really makes the foreground subjects pop form the BG. Impressive!
