Emu in the Sky

Just an initial rough process of the Emu taken early this morning in Leyburn. Lots more work needed - I thought I'd make it a PixInsight learning project one day.

I'm loving what the cold weather does for stock DSLR noise reduction - almost everything was covered in frost by the time I called it a night.

1x 900 sec, f/8, ISO 1600 taken with a Canon 5DmkII + 14 mm f/2.8L II piggybacked on an EQ6 Pro + GSO RC8 + Orion mini guider.

It's amazing how much atmospheric refraction there is on the corners. Even with autoguiding and very good polar alignment, I can see the left/right edge stars elongate with successive shots (but the centre stacks perfectly).

Nice image Dave,well done!,unfortunately Saturday night has been the worst seeing over the last week.We were up till 2 am gathering and testing gear when we could.

Have you cropped this image?I did an image like this once using a 10-22 mm EF-S lens on my 50 D (at 10 mm)and from memory it appeared a wider angle view than your,doing the math-my focal length would re longer(16 mm on a crop) than your 14 mm on your 5 D 2.

Thanks Chris & Lester. We were totally clouded-out in Leyburn on that Saturday, so I guess you were lucky!

Chris - It's a full frame image... I don't remember cropping much/any of it. You made me curious so I dug it up... is this the image you're referring to?

The fields of view for both lenses are quite similar - 10-22 has a 107 degree diagonal field of view vs the 14 mm's 114 degrees. I see that your image didn't include Crux, whereas mine is cropped at Lamb Cent Neb... but yours includes slightly more of the Milky Way on the other side.
