Nothing that new just a revised GUI that sits on top of Win7

For what its worth I've been running an evaluation version and unless you have a touch screen the differrence will not improve your Windows experience IMO

Also if you are game to try the evaluation version be aware that it can not be uninstalled. (I got caught and are now stuck with it unless I reformat and reinstall WIN7)

I've today been trialing it on our 82 inch Perceptive Pixel.

Windows 8 is definitely just a tablet interface.

Windows 8 is harder to use on a proper touch screen than Windows 7.

For tablets only, not serious PC's.

Steve Balmer has the Perceptive Pixel 82 inch in his office, and last week Microsoft bought the Perceptive Pixel company. I'm guessing Windows 9 will be the one we are all after, Windows 8 is just to keep Microsoft in the pleb user gadget market.

I find windows for the last 15 years have been releasing one good OS than one crap one 98 was good ME sucked XP was great Vista sucked Win7 great so Win 8 is following the pattern in my books

XP sucked big when it was first released... wasn't good until they sorted the problems with SP3.
Vista for me was brilliant.... after SP1. It never once gave me grief, not once. I have had more issues with Win 7 than I ever did with Vista SP1.
I even prefered the austhetics of Vista over 7.
XP gave me blue screens all the time until SP3 was released.

Here's my opinion

98 3E was a good system still based on DOS so its works were more readily available. Could not be used however with many programs designed for the non DOS later MS offerings and had to be forgone.

ME was a bit of a lame duck. not too many problems, MS's first release of a non DOS base system. It's limitations heralded an early release of Windows XP which was a bit of a dog. However by the time all its problems were sorted out with SP3 it became a most reliable and friendly system and enjoyed so much by the users they stopped needing to update their OS's.

This annoyed MS because they were losing market share to Mac so they tried a new idea with Vista which was a bit of a look alike to to the Mac with few good points and all the bad points. However it was reasonably friendly and liked by many.

MS then brought out its enhanced Vista and called it Windows 7. By this time it had decided that to keep its market share it would need to lock up users so that they would be stuck with MS forever. It built so many if's and but's into it under the guise of security that it is very unfriendly to anyone that does not bow down to them.

Cloud computing will probably take most of their client base because it will save them zillions.

I have not tried Windows 8 and don't intend too.

I hope Linux will take over a bit more of the market share.

Not going near it as yet. MS use the general public as beta testers with all their releases, holy cow even XP is not right. My tech mate has installed it in a couple of systems he has built and said in all cases, the purchasers were not happy and wanted Win7 instead. They reckon 8 was too "buggy". This is to be expected as the official release is not until October I believe. But having said that we all know what Microsoft is like the general public will have to find out all the problems as they arise. Will they ever get it right....
On that note, I have finally given up on all versions of IE, they are total crud, I now use either Chrome or Firefox, at least they don't hang. I was finding IE was hanging all the time, even after a complete re-install, eventually had a gutfull....

Have been using Windows 8 as my daily driver on a laptop that's from 2007.
The OS is definitely geared towards future hardware, with multi-touch support on both screen and trackpad.

But even on current hardware, I find I prefer using Windows 8 to Windows 7. I love it, and can't wait to get my hands on it and new hardware on October 26.

If only mac released a legal version of osx for pc then those pricks would fall over and near die. Windows 7 has being good but xp gets the job done still today apart from dx10/11 and 64bit, which if ms released dx10/11 for windows xp i would still be using it. I'am really getting sick of them spewing out os after os just to spin more profit.
I use to ***** about the price of macs hardware wise but hell atleast the next os release is only $29 not $350 like those ms wallet rapist. I hate mircosoft and its monopoly, directx and its many other bs standards from server side to home user which stop fair competition. I like to dream what it would have being like if GPL linux won the the battle anyhow that my ms hate rant hahaha.

PS. service pack 3 broke many systems, it may have being great for you Simon but not for thousands of others haha. SP2 tightened things up perfect IMO.

Umm, no. I use the best multi-touch screen money can buy (over $100K), and Windows 8 is terrible on it. Windows 7 is better on big multi-touch screens.

Windows 8 is for tablets, not real computers and big screens.
