Home Position EQ6 cone error?

From my pad I am unable to do a visual PA, am need to therefore set my 'home' position manually. my rudimentary method was to leave the counter weights on without the scope putting the DEC in a vertical position and set 0 on the dial and Lock the clutch. l then rotate through 90deg and off balancing the scope so it points vertically for RA and do the same as above. Is there another method of 'squaring' the scope to home without a visual polar alignment?

Hi Steve

I set my DEC home by putting the pointer on zero on the dec scale (which I have adjusted based on previous alignment passes), and use a digital inclinometer to get the RA homed (same angle as side of mount, usually very close to 90 degrees if have taken time to level tripod properly).
